Artist Humphrey Ocean and scientist and filmmaker John Tchalenko have been exploring the subject over a number of years. This film charts their award winning Wellcome Trust project and exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery London. They used two modern biomedical tools - the eye-tracker and the brain scanner - to study how the eye, hand and brain co-ordinate while a portrait is being drawn.

The more we learn about how pictures are produced, the more wondrous the act of artistic creation appears.
